The folks at ZAM recently published a pretty awesome interview with Jeremy Gaffney where he talked about everything from role-playing servers to monetization systems in MMOs and elder game PvP content and raiding in WildStar. Not much in the way of new information was revealed, but we did find out that Carbine Studios plans on talking more about the business model of WildStar within the next month.
He also talked quite a bit about how the team feels about the various monetization systems popular MMOs use:
“The best business models out there are ones that are user friendly. The PLEX model in EVE Online is awesome. If you have a lot of money but you don’t have time, awesome, buy a PLEX for real money and it’s a one month subscription. Now sell that to somebody who wants to play for free. Now the guy who plays for free knows ‘If I get enough ISK each month, I can play for free.’ The guy with lots of money is like ‘Woohoo, I can buy ISK legally,’ and the company’s like ‘Score, the free to play players are paying $20 a month.’ That’s very compelling to all three parties involved.”
While the development team has mentioned the fact that WildStar will feature a hybrid business model, we’re all still anxiously awaiting the details. From what Jeremy Gaffney mentions in this interview, it’s possible that hybrid model may give players options for either possible subscriptions or cash shop options. We shall see soon enough!
